CoCounsel leverages the latest breakthroughs in A.I. technology to perform a wide range of sophisticated legal tasks. Casetext's team of attorneys and AI engineers have rigorously tested CoCounsel and implemented a robust system of safeguards and security protocols to ensure that attorneys can use CoCounsel in their legal practices. Information regarding Casetext's internal testing of CoCounsel, our security measures, and related protocols are summarized below:
Specific legal applications: CoCounsel offers a suite of applications that have been specifically developed for litigators and transactional attorneys. These applications have been trained on the primary law and other legal documents to serve the particular needs of litigators and transactional attorneys.
Extensive testing: CoCounsel has been rigorously tested by Casetext’s internal team of litigators and transactional attorneys, who work closely with Casetext’s AI engineers to ensure that CoCounsel’s answers are accurate and can be used by attorneys in their daily practices. All of CoCounsel’s applications have been subjected to thousands of internal tests. After clearing the internal testing phase, CoCounsel’s applications are then released to our beta testing group, which is composed of hundreds of attorneys from elite boutique and large law firms, for additional testing before finally being released to the public.
Guardrails against “hallucinated” authorities: CoCounsel’s legal research application retrieves information from the primary law only. By contrast, ChatGPT and other public AI models do not have these guardrails in place and can therefore make up or “hallucinate” legal authorities that do not actually exist.
Daily updates: CoCounsel’s legal research application pulls from Casetext’s database of primary law, which is updated daily. No such regular updates exist for ChatGPT or other public large language models, which can generate language based on information that is more than a year old.
Know whether you are citing good law: All cases cited by CoCounsel are checked by Casetext’s “SmartCite” citator to determine whether those authorities are still good law.
Robust security protocols: Casetext is deeply committed to security and privacy and has implemented rigorous security protocols to maintain the confidentiality of your data. All data you provide to Casetext when you use CoCounsel, including any and all information and documents you choose to upload to CoCounsel, are encrypted and protected in accordance with Casetext’s comprehensive security program. None of your information or documents are shared or used to train the CoCounsel platform or the underlying large language model.
Although we have implemented important safeguards to bolster the accuracy of CoCounsel's answers, please note that A.I. is no replacement for human intelligence, and users should not substitute CoCounsel’s answers for the insights of human attorneys. CoCounsel’s answers do not constitute legal advice. CoCounsel is intended to assist attorneys with routine legal tasks, but it cannot (and should not) be used to replace an attorney’s judgment. It is still up to attorneys to decide what to do with the information provided by CoCounsel.
