CoCounsel can summarize information.

A. How the AI works

Generally, summarizing follows these steps.

  1. You provide files.

  2. You indicate the summary length, whether brief, detailed, or comprehensive.

  3. CoCounsel reads every word of each file.

  4. CoCounsel provides the selected summary.

  5. You may export the results as a Word Document or copy the results to paste somewhere else.

B. Getting Started

There are a few ways to get started.

1. Just ask or add files

To request a summary, just ask CoCounsel. Use normal sentences like you would to a colleague. You may also add files to get started. CoCounsel will then tell you what it needs.

2. Select examples

CoCounsel reminds you what it can do. Select “Summarize.” As you chat, CoCounsel will suggest specific work based on your request. Select "Give me examples" or open the right sidebar.

C. Request a summary

1. Select a summary length

Brief Summary

A paragraph summary of each file.

Detailed Summary

A bulleted summary of a range of pages CoCounsel identifies within each file (e.g., pages 1-3, 4-6).

Comprehensive Summary

A bulleted summary of every page within each file.

2. Consider your intended use

You can summarize any information with CoCounsel, including deposition transcripts, medical records, law review articles, statutes, contracts, and case files, just to name a few. So consider your intended use.

For example:

  • If the summary will help you make decisions about the next step in a case, you may want a detailed or comprehensive summary.

  • If the summary will serve as a short cover sheet or if you need a high-level overview, you may want a brief summary.

D. Limitations

1. Input limits

File type

.doc, .docx, .pdf, .txt

File size

500 MB .pdfs

20 MB text files

File amount

200 files

2. Output limits

The summary will be the selected length.

3. Focused summaries

CoCounsel does not focus its summaries on specific content.

Not possible: Summarize the Facts and Analysis sections of this court decision.

✨ CoCounsel can focus on specific content during a Review. Learn about Reviewing

4. Compare and contrast documents

CoCounsel reviews each document on its own. This means CoCounsel cannot complete requests that require CoCounsel to compare or contrast documents or contracts.

5. Summarizing handwriting

Generally, if a human can read handwritten text, then CoCounsel should be able to read it, too. This means CoCounsel’s ability to read handwritten text can vary, depending on legibility.

6. Summarizing pasted text

CoCounsel cannot use its summarize capabilities for pasted text.

✨ Ask CoCounsel to summarize pasted text "right here in the chat."

CoCounsel will provide reminders about its capabilities and limitations.

E. Samples

It is impossible to list all of CoCounsel's capabilities, but please use these samples to consider how CoCounsel will help with your work.

1. Requests

Please help me summarize a document.

I need a comprehensive summary.

Please provide a detailed summary. Before you begin, please provide an interpretation of this request, so I know we're on the same page.

Provide a bulleted summary of this pasted text right here in the chat: [pasted text].

2. Refine results

After reviewing CoCounsel’s response, continue chatting with CoCounsel to refine the results.

Revise the length

Re-summarize this document, but instead of a brief summary please provide a detailed summary.

Request additional assistance

Review both documents that were summarized and answer these three questions: What injuries were sustained? Were the drivers of the vehicles taking their usual routes at the time of the accident? How long did it take first responders to arrive on the scene?
